Butterfly Value
A ' Butterfly Valve ' is from a family of valves called Quarter turn valves. The " butterfly " is a metal disc mounted on a rod. When the valve is closed, the disc is turned so that it completely blocks off the passageway. When the valve is open, the disc is rotated a quarter turn so that it allows unrestricted passage. The position of the disc is effected from outside the valve. Butterfly valves are normally used as throttling valves to control flow.

Butterfly valves are mainly used as safety valves or as a turbine inlet valves and pump valves, especially for heads ranging from 45 to 230 m. These valves are mounted on the penstock upstream of the spiral case and serve as an operating, emergency and maintenance shut-off device. They are operated by oil hydraulic systems for opening and closing or closing weight and hydraulic pressure for opening.

The sealing system is of flexible adjustable type - rubber/metal or metal/metal. The lattice door type valves can be also equipped with a maintenance seal. Various components and their design rules will be governed by critical parameters such as pressure head, flow rate, sealing diameter, inlet diameter of the turbine.
